The Multi-Million Dollar Awards Programme

For competitive athletes, the cost of training at elite levels requires an enormous financial investment over many years. Of all the athletes who dream of winning an Olympic medal, only a small percentage will find themselves on the podium at the Games.
The Singapore National Olympic Council in the 1990s, under the direction of then President Dr. Yeo Ning Hong, devised an incentive scheme to reward medal-winning athletes. The Multi-Million Dollar Awards Programme provides a cash payout to athletes who win gold medals at the Olympic, Asian, Commonwealth and South East Asian Games.
The largest award is $1 million, payable to the athlete who claims a gold medal at the Olympic Games. The smallest is a $10,000 windfall for a gold medalist at the SEA Games. The value of the awards varies with the respective Games, with the Olympic Games providing significantly higher payouts. The awards also vary based on individual versus team events.

China to reward top Olympians with US$51,000 each

BEIJING - China's gold medal winners at the Beijing Olympics will be taking home cash along with their medals, state media reported Tuesday.

Each gold medalist will get 350,000 yuan (US$51,000) each, the official Xinhua News Agency said, citing Xiao Shan, the deputy head of China's General Administration of Sports.

The prize compares to the 200,000 yuan (US$29,000) handed out to gold medal winners after the 2004 Olympic games, the report said.

The report did not say if silver and bronze medalists were also to be rewarded. Phone calls to the press office of China's General Administration of Sports rang unanswered Tuesday.

China topped the gold-medal chart with 51 medals, a haul that was the largest since the Soviet Union won 55 in Seoul in 1988.

Overall, China won 100 medals in 25 different sports, including its first ever in sailing, beach volleyball and field hockey.

It was the first time since 1936 that a country other than the U.S. or the Soviet Union/Russia led the gold medal list. The U.S. trailed behind the Chinese in golds with 36.

It is not uncommon for countries to reward their medal-winning athletes to compensate them for the financial burden of training.

The United States has paid prize money to top Olympians for years. At the 2006 Winter Olympics, athletes were given US$25,000 for gold, US$15,000 for silver and US$10,000 for bronze.

Canadian athletes earned approximately US$20,000 for each gold medal, US$15,000 for each silver and US$10,000 for each bronze won at the Beijing games, the first time the country has rewarded its athletes.

Zhōuzhuāng (周庄)is a town in Jiangsu province (江苏省), China(中国). It is located within Kunshan (昆山)county-level city, 30 km southeast of Suzhou(苏州).

Zhouzhuang is a popular tourist destination. It is one of the most famous water townships in China, noted for its profound cultural background, the well preserved ancient residential houses, the elegant watery views and the strong local colored traditions and customs. It has been called the "Venice of the East"(东方威尼斯).

Certain sequences in Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible III were filmed in this place. In the movie, he was seen running fast through one of the town's narrow alleys and shouting at the pedestrians "让开！让开！".

The Conference Center, located in Salt Lake City, Utah, is the premier meeting hall for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the LDS Church, popularly known as the "Mormon Church"). Completed in spring 2000 in time for the church's April 2000 general conference, the 21,000 seat Conference Center replaced the traditional use of the nearby Salt Lake Tabernacle, built in 1868, for semiannual LDS Church general conferences and major church gatherings, devotionals, and other events.

The 1.4 million square foot (130,000 m2) Conference Center seats 21,200 people in its main auditorium. This includes the rostrum behind the pulpit facing the audience, which provides seating at general conference for 158 general authorities and general officers of the church and the 360-voice Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The auditorium is large enough to hold two Boeing 747s inside. All seats in the audience have an unobstructed view of the pulpit because the balcony is held up by radial trusses. This construction method allows the balcony to sink a full 6 inches under full capacity. Behind the podium is a 7,667-pipe and 130-rank pipe organ. Underground is a parking garage that can hold 1400 cars. A modernist, three-story chandelier hangs in a skylight in the interior of the building.

All eyes on appeal against STB decision
Meanwhile, HPL suit against sellers is officially stayed

(SINGAPORE) The twists and turns in the Horizon Towers saga never seem to end: even as one legal showdown was averted yesterday, another dramatic court session is set to take place.

Today's session is expected to be a dramatic one, with HPL and its partners having applied to intervene - that is, participate - at this hearing.

Legal proceedings against the majority sellers of Horizon Towers were officially stayed yesterday - when the High Court granted an application to adjourn the hearing of a lawsuit which Hotel Properties Ltd (HPL) and its partners brought against the sellers.

HPL, Morgan Stanley Real Estate-managed funds and Qatar Investment Authority had sued former members of the development's sales committee for millions of dollars - and asked that all 272 owners who signed the deal also be bound by any judgement that may be made.

The buyers blamed the sellers for the en bloc sale not going through. The Strata Titles Board had, in August, rejected the application filed by Horizon Towers for a collective sale order - on the grounds that it was defective.

The STB's decision came just days before the sale completion deadline, which meant there was no time to appeal the decision or file a fresh appeal.

The majority sellers finally agreed last week to meet the buyers' demands to extend the sale completion deadline - and HPL and its partners reciprocated by applying for an adjournment of the legal proceedings against the sellers.

However, with the suit not withdrawn, the threat of legal action still hangs over the majority sellers. No date has yet been fixed for the next hearing.

All eyes are now on the next major court session: this morning's hearing of the appeal against the STB's decision, in the High Court before Justice Choo Han Teck.

The appeal will be between the majority sellers - represented by Tan Rajah & Cheah - and the minority sellers, who didn't agree to the en bloc sale.

The majority sellers say STB was 'wrong in law' to have dismissed their application. The board had rejected the application, without considering its merits, because it had three incomplete or missing pages.

But the majority sellers say these three missing pages were around at the time of the application, but were later not submitted due to a clerical error.

Today's session is expected to be a dramatic one, with HPL and its partners having applied to intervene - that is, participate - at this hearing. The buyers will be represented by Allen & Gledhill.

Another group of 13 Horizon Towers owners - who form part of the majority who agreed to the collective sale - have also applied to be parties to the appeal, on the grounds that they 'have an interest in the outcome of these proceedings'.

This group of 13 owners, which includes local singer Ho Yeow Sun and her husband Kong Hee - are represented by Rajah & Tann.

Judge Choo will hear the two applications to intervene first, before hearing the appeal against the STB's decision.

During the SARS period, ordinary stray cats

were mistakenly thought to be capable of spreading the SARS virus.

SARS outbreak started because of people eating some SARS-infected civet cats in Guangdong, China in 2003.

The term, civet cat,

is a misnomer. A civet cat is more closely related to a raccoon than a cat.

A massive search and kill operation was launched in Singapore during that time and as many as 200 cats were terminated per day.

The Cats Welfare Society and a team of volunteers started its own campaign to re-habilitate the stray cats, and housed the healthy ones to prevent merciless killings.

Robin and his close friend, Christabelle, together with her team, took in about 150 cats their house and have been providing a "temporary" animal shelter, hoping that once the pandemic is over, the cats can be re-homed or adopted.

So if you know of anyone who wish to adopt a cat, a kitten, or who is willing to support such a cause in animal welfare and protection, please let Robin know.

Rémy Julienne

(born April 17, 1930) is a pioneering French driving stunt performer, stunt coordinator, assistant director and occasional actor. He is also a former rallycross champion and 1956 French motorcross champion. He is currently hospital bound with a heart condition. God bless his soul.

He is a veteran of over 100 films. Notable large film projects in which he has arranged stunts, consulted or manufactured special stunt cars include The Italian Job, Ronin, and The Bourne Identity, in addition to five James Bond films directed by John Glen.

His choreographed stunt sequences are usually destructive, with high-speed chases and highly realistic vehicle behaviour. French car manufacturers, notably Renault and Citroën, frequently called on his services for their TV and film commercials.

He has also coordinated the attraction Moteurs... Action! Stunt Show Spectacular at Walt Disney Studios Park in Paris.

He began a school in France to provide drivers and mechanics with the specialized skills needed for stunt work.

His career suffered a setback in 1999, when a stunt went wrong during the filming of Taxi 2, written and produced by Luc Besson and directed by Gérard Pirès, causing the death of a cameraman and the serious injury of the cameraman's assistant. Julienne accused the production company of taking short cuts in safety equipment, which Besson denied.

In November 2005, Julienne was contracted by French TV station M6 to consult on a French-language remake of the 1970s series Starsky and Hutch.

His sons Michel and Dominique are also highly skilled stunt drivers/coordinators.

A FEW new makes will be unveiling their cars at November's Singapore Motorshow,

even as some previous participants decide to give this year's event a miss.

Biennial brand-building platform: Rental space and setting-up costs can come up to as much as $100,000 to $200,000, excluding the exhibits
Fiat, Naza, Perodua and TD2000 will be taking part for the first time at the eighth edition of the show, which is organised once every two years by the Motor Traders Association of Singapore (MTA).

They will join Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Honda, Hyundai, Lamborghini, Lexus, Maserati, Mazda, Nissan, Ssangyong, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota at the Suntec City from Nov 10-19.

But giving this year a miss are Peugeot, BMW, Mini, Chevrolet, Saab, Opel, Porsche and Rolls-Royce. The first two are brands represented by Sime Darby companies, while Chevy, Saab and Opel are owned by General Motors, the world's biggest carmaker. The last four marques are distributed by the Eurokars Group of Companies.

All eight were part of the 2004 Motorshow. But this year, they join a string of names which have refrained from participating in the MTA-organised event.

They are Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi and Kia (all of which come under the Cycle & Carriage umbrella), Volvo and Jaguar (both from the Wearnes group), Ford (part of Sime Darby), Renault and Volks wagen.

Although the people behind the brands refused to comment on the reason for their non-participation, it is understood that cost is one factor.

'Rental space and setting-up costs can come up to as much as $100,000 to $200,000 excluding the exhibits,' says the manager at a smaller dealership in Leng Kee Road. 'To do it properly, you need about a quarter of a million dollars per brand.'

As a benchmark, authorised Toyota and Lexus distributor Borneo Motors Singapore spent $700,000 on its stand two years ago, which was the biggest at the show.

'If we are going to spend that amount of money, we have to look at the returns and whether the investment can be justified,' says one source.

Another factor is that support from principals is lower this year as their resources are being put into bigger shows in the region, like the Bangkok and Sydney shows.

'Principals are important because they share the costs with us. The support can be substantial, from flying in the exhibits to providing the stands which have to conform to corporate identity standards,' adds the source.

But the MTA says that as the region's premier motoring event, the Singapore Motorshow has always received enthusiastic response.

'This year is not an exception,' says MTA president Chia Yong Sian. 'Three months before the show, there is already an equal number of car brands who have confirmed their participation, including first-time exhibitors, and there is an increase in the amount of space they are taking up, compared with the 2004 show.'

He says some exhibitors have also significantly increased their exhibiting space. There is also an increase in sponsors.

'All this indicates the growing value the industry attaches to the show,' says Mr Chia. 'It is an important biennial brand-building platform and exhibiting car brands know the value of channelling time, effort and money to put up a good show.'

This year, part of the top level - of the three levels the show traditionally occupies at Suntec City - will be converted into a 'green' area.

Exhibitors in this corner - measuring about 200 square metres - will not be charged for displaying their environmentally-friendly vehicles like petrol-electric hybrids and fuel cell-powered cars.
